Where it started
More than forty years ago, my brother and I spent hours playing MiG Alley Ace on our 8-bit Atari. Dogfight Duel 2 was made as a tribute to that pure joy.

Biplane duels over the Liptov valley
One plane each, first to two points
Get it on Google Play Got a code from a friend? How the biplane fliesThree ways to fly
The same flight model everywhere: a climb costs speed and a dive gives it back, a real stall under 82 km/h where the plane falls over a wing, loops with emergency power or from a dive, a hard pull stalls sooner, a steep bank slips towards the ground, a gliding plane with the engine off, guns that overheat and jam after sixty rounds in a row, and wings you can shoot off.
A pilot from anywhere in the world, matched by league points on the dedicated server. Every match pays Aerocoins.

A bot flies with your rules and your controls: the same stick, the same throttle, the same flight model. Five levels, from a gentle sparring partner to an ace.

Each round starts at a spawn point out of sight of the other pilot. Lose the plane, lose the round; outlive the other one for ten seconds and the point is yours.

How your biplane flies
Dogfight Duel 2 has a flight model of its own, the same for you, for the bot and for the server, at every frame rate on every phone. It is not a simulator with a hundred switches, but it keeps the things a real pilot of 1918 had to know: what a climb costs, what the throttle can and cannot do, and what happens when you ask the wing for more than it can give.
The engine pulls, the air brakes and gravity works along your path. Dive and the speed grows, straight down to about 375 km/h. Climb and you pay for every metre: the same plane that dives at 375 is down to 95 km/h at the top of the zoom. Above you the arena ends in a ceiling: there the engine cuts out and the nose falls, it starts again 50 m lower with the nose down.
The lever sets the power, the power sets the speed you can hold in level flight: 181 km/h at idle, 227 at the detent, 272 with emergency power - the speeds of the fighters of 1918. In a climb the speed settles much lower: the detent holds 24° at about 90 km/h, emergency power 71° at about 90 km/h. Emergency power heats the engine, after 10 s it overheats and gives only the detent until it cools for 15 s. Lever under idle: the engine stops and the plane glides with its nose down. It burns 250 l in five minutes at the detent, twice as fast at full power.
In level flight the wing gives up under 82 km/h. But the harder you pull, the more it has to carry, and the faster it stalls: at 2 G already at 116 km/h, at 3 G at 142. Under about 136 km/h a full pull asks more than the wing can carry: it quits under you. Ease the stick and it carries again; push and it carries even slower than 82. At the top of a loop, upside down, it carries less than the weight of the plane, so you can go over slower there than you could fly level.
A loop from level flight goes over with emergency power from about 110 km/h (four in a row, even after the engine overheats) or at the detent from about 225 km/h. Too slow, and the plane runs out of speed on the way up, stalls and falls off over a wing. Every hard pull bleeds speed, the engine gives it back slowly.
A stall is not a bump. The lower wing stalls first (in a climbing turn the inner one, it flies slower), sinks a little, and the more it sinks the less it carries: for a moment nothing seems to happen, then the plane falls over the wing, rolls a hundred degrees and more, and the nose drops under the horizon whatever you do with the stick. The plane is heavy: it keeps rotating until the dive gives the wing its speed back, then the roll dies away slowly and the plane sinks for a while longer.
The lift of the wing points up out of the wings, so in a bank only a part of it holds the plane up: the rest of the weight pulls the nose down and the plane slips towards the ground. A full pull at the detent turns 360° in about 9 s, bleeding the speed to the edge of the stall (a half pull in a 60° bank: 19 s at a steady 185 km/h), and holds the height up to a bank of about 75°; on its side the plane slips down, some 630 m in 40 s. Slower, the same stick turns the nose faster, but under about 136 km/h a full pull asks more than the wing can carry: the best turn is just under the stall.
Every one of the 15 hit zones changes the flight, on the server, so both pilots see the same thing.

Settings › Insignia
Design your mark in the game. It is painted into the roundels on the wings, the tail and the fuselage, and your nickname goes on both sides of the fuselage behind the roundel, black letters edged in white. Every opponent sees them in the duel and in the replay. The insignia is saved on your account, so it flies with you to a new phone.
After the match
Every round is recorded as you fly it. After the match a director cuts it into a film of the best shots: the guns firing from beside the cockpit, the hits, the engine catching fire, every kill whole from the last bullets to the wreck burning on the ground. The camera never sits inside a cloud, and the bar at the top shows the date, the arena and both pilots with their flags.

League of Aces
Every week one league match between the best pilots of the league, cut by the director of the game into its film. Any league match can be chosen: fly well.
Settings › Pilot
Every pilot flies under a nickname with the flag of their country beside it and its three letters under it: on the countdown before each round, on the score after it, in the replay and when the league finds you an opponent. With the insignia editor unlocked, the nickname is painted on your fuselage too.
The country comes from your phone at the first start, and you can change it any time. 243 flags, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, with England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland of their own. The nickname is up to 15 letters and digits. Signed in, both are kept on your account.
